Moxy Chelsea Hotel, New York
Rockwell Group introduces Moxy Chelsea, an impressive modern hotel situated in the center of New York's flower district.
Rockwell Group has crafted the public and amenity areas of Moxy Chelsea, situated in the vibrant Flower District of Manhattan. The hotel’s restaurant, lounge, and rooftop serve as an opulent retreat, offering a blend of luxury and comfort away from the city's energetic pace, all influenced by the neighborhood's beauty and diversity. Drawing inspiration from the local flower market, the interiors feature a mix of vibrant colors, materials, patterns, and forms, resulting in a lively and inviting design. This creates a refined and curated environment that caters to the needs of modern travelers, multi-taskers, and locals alike.
On the ground floor, the hotel's Italian restaurant 'Feroce' presents a series of thoughtfully designed rooms that lead to an outdoor terrace, a hidden sanctuary surrounded by greenery for guests to enjoy dining and socializing. The restaurant injects playfulness with collections of colorful Italian sweets displayed in apothecary jars on glass and brass shelves, alongside aperitif and digestif bottles that establish a striking contrast, reflecting the Moxy brand’s essence throughout the hotel.
The recessed Venetian plaster walls and illuminated barrel-vaulted ceiling are enhanced by geometric light fixtures that transport guests to early 20th Century Milan and Rome. The oversized mosaic tile floor in soft pastels complements the rich emerald and burgundy tones of the woodwork and leather upholstery, adding both depth and warmth to the space.
The main dining room shares features with the café and bar areas but embodies a darker aesthetic, with deep woods predominant in the furniture, ceiling designs, and flooring. Three arched recesses provide semi-circular booth seating with views of the restaurant and the adjacent dining courtyard. The oversized mosaic floor tiles of the bar extend into dark terrazzo tabletops, while bespoke grappa-tasting carts designed by Rockwell Group enhance the space’s vibrancy.
A sliding glass door opens into the private dining room, adorned with large-scale, deconstructed vintage Italian liquor posters set against antiqued mirrors. The ground floor restrooms feature rich emerald walls and dark terrazzo, connecting the restaurant’s interior design.
Continuing the vintage Italian theme, the Moxy Lounge on the second floor serves as a gathering spot for guests. Visitors enter through a grand concrete staircase, encased in glass, leading to a space designed for socializing, dining, drinking, and working, effectively merging different worlds. To the right is the Winter Garden, featuring a striking 20-foot-high living wall and views overlooking New York's Flower District. A kinetic screen of tilting glass tiles separates the bar from the Winter Garden. The lounge’s burgundy upholstery and large mosaic tiled flooring reflect the style of the Feroce restaurant below, while concrete and glass elements contribute to a relaxed, edgy ambiance perfect for enjoying cocktails.
Designed for versatility, several smaller lounges adapt their functions throughout the day. These spaces provide private studio settings for meetings and transform into lively social areas in the evening. Foldable tables, plush modular seating, and adjustable screens make this transition seamless. Vibrant patterns, sleek furniture design, and modern accessories characterize each interior, with the concrete building fabric providing a neutral backdrop that makes the striking designs stand out.
The entrance and staircase to the rooftop bar, adorned with large botanical graphics, heighten the anticipation of this premier destination, the hotel’s crowning jewel.
The Fleur Room features a lively blend of materials, combining rough concrete and industrial windows with polished bronze, warm wall coverings, and plush furnishings—all merging industrial and elegant styles. Subtle indirect lighting enhances the breathtaking views while providing an intimate atmosphere, complemented by inverted resin pyramids that glow with embedded florals, echoing the surrounding Garden District.
Adjacent to the bar, an indoor/outdoor lounge features kinetic windows that convert the space into a sky veranda at the push of a button. In contrast to the Fleur Room, the decor is bolder, with emerald walls and ceiling paired with floral-upholstered booth seating that encircles the bar. Wooden floors transition to striking black, white, and green concrete tiles that double as a dance floor as festivities continue into the morning. A large circular mirror on the back wall of the bar frames celebrated skyline reflections and highlights the pendant lighting from different perspectives, blending the interior and exterior spaces.
In a city celebrated for its exceptional hotels, Moxy Chelsea distinguishes itself with its elegant quirkiness and deep appreciation for its iconic locale. Rockwell Group has successfully captured the vibrant essence of New York, ensuring that guests feel immersed in the city's excitement while enjoying the ultra-modern luxury of the hotel.
