LA Design Week: Henzel Studio, THE NEW Gallery, Los Angeles
Twentieth and THE NEW Gallery introduce the Henzel Studio Collaborations exhibition, which launches at the 2019 Los Angeles Design Festival.
Established in 2016 by Stefan Lawrence, who founded Twentieth, and co-curated by artist Daniele Albright, THE NEW is situated adjacent to Twentieth’s Los Angeles gallery, showcasing a variety of exhibitions each year. In 2019, during the Los Angeles Design Festival, THE NEW featured Henzel Studio Collaborations, showcasing a collection of limited edition artist rugs created by leading figures in contemporary art.
The exhibition celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Twentieth and Henzel Studio, showcasing rug designs by notable artists like Richard Prince, Helmut Lang, and Marilyn Minter. This event also features the US debut of rug designs from Tony Oursler, Ashley Bickerton, Jwan Yosef, and Carsten Höller, along with the first rug crafted for Henzel Studio by Videre Licet.
The collection of exceptional contemporary designs decorates the gallery's walls, with some designs creatively extending onto the floor. Carsten Höller's 'Mushroom Carpet' humorously greets visitors at the gallery entrance, echoing the artist's flamboyant style. Meanwhile, the iconic Marilyn Monroe, synonymous with Los Angeles, draws attention to the floor with a vibrant Andy Warhol design, which breaks away from the conventional rectangular shape, exhibiting cut-outs, frayed edges, and irregular borders.
Lawrence Weiner's 'From Before and After' design instantly grabbed my attention with its vibrant colors and bold typography. The 100% silk rug seamlessly merges classic rug design with artistic flair and is limited to just fifty pieces.
