LA Design Festival: Twentieth Gallery
Highlights from the 2019 visit to the Twentieth gallery and showroom in Los Angeles during the Design Festival.
During the 2019 Los Angeles Design Festival, Twentieth commemorated their 20th anniversary by hosting various events and showcases throughout the week. One highlight was the Henzel Studio Collaborations, featured in their 'THE NEW' Gallery space adjacent to their iconic scale-clad building. Renowned for curating contemporary furnishings and home décor, the brand showcases an impressive collection of works from a diverse array of international designers and mediums.
The expansive 6,000 square foot gallery on Beverly Boulevard features an extensive assortment of designs, including sculptural light fixtures, furniture, and captivating sculptures like Mattia Biagi's tar-covered Bicycle and teddy bear (first and last images), turning ordinary objects into intriguing creations. Another attention-grabbing piece is Christopher Boots' Vanity Screen (second from top), a project that took four years to complete. This stunning room divider combines clear and smoky quartz crystals with lapis lazuli, set against a moon-like background. The screen itself is cast in solid bronze.
The vaulted ceiling enhances the interior, transforming it into more than just an exhibition space; it becomes a hub for culture, events, and installations. While many galleries present their works in a formal manner, Twentieth offers a blend of the familiar and the strange, arranging pieces as they might be displayed in a home, integrated among sculptures and lighting designs.
Twentieth establishes the benchmark for contemporary furniture and design, making it an essential stop for both locals and visitors. Continuously evolving with new displays throughout the year, it is the first place I intend to visit upon my return to the City of Angels.
