The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art: A Visionary Landmark in Los Angeles
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded by legendary filmmaker George Lucas and businesswoman Mellody Hobson, is set to become a transformative cultural institution in Los Angeles. Located in Exposition Park, the museum is dedicated to the art of storytelling across multiple mediums, from traditional paintings and illustrations to cinematic and digital creations. As one of the most anticipated museum projects in the world, it aims to redefine how narrative art is presented and experienced.
The visionary design of the museum is spearheaded by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, with Stantec serving as the executive architect. Encompassing nearly 300,000 square feet over five levels, the museum's structure features a sleek, flowing form that appears to float above the landscape. This futuristic design not only provides an eye-catching visual identity but also fosters an open, welcoming environment at ground level, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding park and encouraging community interaction
Inside, the museum will boast over 100,000 square feet of gallery space spread across three floors, showcasing a diverse range of exhibitions that highlight the power of narrative art. Beyond its extensive galleries, visitors will have access to two state-of-the-art theaters, educational studios, a comprehensive library, event spaces, a restaurant, a café, and a retail shop. These amenities are designed to provide a rich, immersive cultural experience catering to art lovers, film enthusiasts, and scholars alike.
Prior to construction, the museum’s site was an asphalt parking lot. Today, thanks to the work of landscape architect Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA, the 11-acre campus has been reimagined into a lush green space. The landscape design incorporates native and drought-resistant plants, over 200 trees, and scenic walkways, enhancing the ecological value of the site while offering visitors a tranquil outdoor setting to complement the museum experience.
Construction of the Lucas Museum began in March 2018. Initially scheduled to open in 2021, the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other unforeseen challenges. As of now, the museum is slated to open its doors to the public in 2026.
Once completed, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will stand as a pioneering institution, celebrating the universal power of storytelling and providing an inspiring space for audiences to explore, learn, and connect with the art of narrative in all its forms.
